When the bridge collapsed on August 1 in Minneapolis, FEMA immediately reached out to state and local officials.
Region V Administrator Edward Buikema, from FEMA's Chicago office, was in Minneapolis at the time of the collapse and went to the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC) just after the incident, along with the regional National Preparedness Division (NPD) director. An NPD staffer was deployed to the EOC to serve as state liaison.
The FEMA Regional Response Coordination Center was activated at level III and ESF #15 (External Affairs) staff are assisting the state with media monitoring and analysis. The Federal Incident Response Team (FIRST) was put on standby.
FEMA will continue to monitor the situation and communicate with the State of Minnesota to provide support for their response to this tragic event.
